Principally a Violinist, Ruth taught herself guitar as a busker on the streets of Southampton, going on to write five acclaimed original records and perform live with award winning international artists such as Ani Difranco and Nick Harper. In recent times Ruth’s music has resonated across the atlantic which has led her to collaborations with producers Todd Sickafoose and international musicians around the world. Still barely knowing the names of the strings, Ruth’s guitar playing and use of unconventional techniques and unique tunings has dumbfounded guitarists ever since.
Moving to London in 2006, Ruth settled on a narrow boat moored on contested land in the east which has been her home for the last 10 years and a source of great inspiration lyrically throughout all her compositions. It's a great comfort that Ruth lives so close to Styx on the River Lea!
“Her tales leave you breathless” - Mojo
“Songs so quirky and unexpected that it’s impossible to imagine anyone else performing them” - The Guardian
Flux create cinematic tunes that have shades of Folk, Urban, Indian and Western Classical. Playing violin, bansuri, guitar and piano as the core, the band is developing a reputation for their multi-instrumental talents and virtuosity. Their music has been described as "intricate, energizing and beautiful," with striking melodies and rhythmic drive.
Their new album 'Shadowlines' brings together an exciting and busy year for the London based 4-piece. Over the last 12 months the band have been to India, the USA and all over Europe, including a trip to WOMEX in Budapest and they have many more trips on the way.
Shadowlines is the culmination of travels, collaborations and studio time for the band and beautifully demonstrates the cinematic and emotionally driven music Flux are known for. With successful individual careers, the music on Shadowlines showcases a unique combination of talent and creativity that has to be heard to be understood.
